Whiteside Area Career Center (WACC) is off to its strongest start yet with 727 students enrolled this year. Several programs—including Welding & Manufacturing, Allied Health, Health Occupations, Automotive Technology, Culinary Arts, and Digital Media Arts—have already reached capacity in at least one of their three daily blocks.
The Building Trades program has hit the ground running with a remodel project for the City of Rock Falls. This marks the second year of renovating a home acquired through taxes, with the goal of returning it as quality housing for a Rock Falls resident.
Collaboration is also in full swing: the Welding & Manufacturing and Building Trades classes are teaming up to create interactive features for Sauk Valley Community College’s Pumpkin Smash event in November. Students and staff are designing and building a trebuchet capable of launching pumpkins over 500 feet, along with a battering ram and log drop that will pulverize pumpkins into compost, combining creativity, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
